To all the product managers out there: have no fear, you will never be unemployed!

Why is that you may wonder?

Simply because there will always be needs and therefore the necessity for new products to satiate those needs. No matter what those products may be.

Surely, people may grow out of their enthusiasm for certain products and fall in love with others but then again that’s life. Human needs will continuously evolve and we (PMs) need to keep up with the trends and find ways to better satisfy those desires.

Let’s dive into the example of home entertainment to understand things better. We kicked things off with videotapes in the beginning. Then we jumped ahead to dvds where the whole business of video clubs and dvd players came into the act. Fast forward to the era of Netflix where we found ourselves streaming movies and watching them online. Who would imagine?

Another example is how humans have advanced in the way they consume knowledge. Going from newspapers, encyclopedias and hardcovered books to the digitalization age of kindle, audiobooks and online news sites.

You can clearly see how the needs in those 2 industries have evolved throughout the years and how the products diverged. Those are just two examples out of thousands. Certainly some products become obsolete and may eventually go out of business.

This is why you actively need to keep up with the pace and stay open minded. Otherwise, you may run the risk of becoming obsolete yourself.

It’s that simple ;)
